Does diet and nutrition affect rheumatoid arthritis?  Is there a diet for arthritis that will help relieve joint pain?  Research in this area shows confusing and contradicting results. Research results and many experts agree that rheumatoid arthritis patients tend to be deficient in folic acid, B vitamins (B6 and B12), vitamins C, D, and E, calcium, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. Folic acid and the B vitamins deficiencies occur especially in patients taking methotrexate. Certainly eating a balanced diet is the first best form of nutrition, but supplements may be needed to meet the extra needs of rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Two different studies with mice show that both green tea and a combination of fish oil with vitamin E reduce the inflammation related to cytokines. The presence of cytokines (pro-inflammatory) in the blood correlates to inflammation in the joints resulting in pain for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.

The best thing to do is begin to journal everything. Keep a daily log of all food and beverages consumed. With this log, record daily activities including exercise and anything that causes pain (e.g. opening a jar, lifting, rising, swollen joints, etc.). Over time if there is a repeated pain with a common cause then eliminate that food or activity.

As long as their method is not directly harmful to them I do not try to argue them down because 1) If they believe it is working I will not succeed in changing their mind, and 2) the person will likely be more receptive to my clinical treatment if I am not argumentative to their beliefs.

However, this is not an article on patient psychology, but the above leads me to answer the question "will exercise cure a frozen shoulder?".

Research shows that most cases of frozen shoulder are "self-limiting" or resolved within 2 years of onset no matter the course of treatment. That’s fine, but who wants to live with an arm that is 50% useful at best if they can do something NOW to increase function and range of motion? Therefore while some view that exercise itself cannot cure frozen shoulder

There are many different conditions which may cause this pain. These conditions may include shortening or thickening of the tendons in the capsule of the shoulder, scar tissue, tendonitis, inflammation, bursitis, or rotator cuff injuries.
Rotator cuff injuries are a significant cause of frozen shoulder because of the period of immobility which is required for recovery. This immobility may cause severe stiffness. Those patients who have had past chest surgeries, diabetes, or chronic-inflammatory arthritis in the shoulder will have a much higher odd of developing the pain.

There are some other medical conditions which may mimic frozen shoulder pain, but are diagnosed differently. Arthritis in the shoulder is a big one as it can result in swelling, stiffness, pain, and occasionally an injury to the rotator cuff. Rotator cuff injuries will differ from frozen shoulder in that the range of motion loss with a rotator cuff injury is usually restricted to a certain direction. Frozen shoulder will have a total loss of mobility.

The effect of frozen shoulder is very obvious. When inflammation begins in the shoulder joint, it becomes "sticky". This "stickiness" leads to pain and stiffness which will make the arm very difficult to move. At times, it may freeze up completely.

The three stages of frozen shoulder are freezing, frozen, and thawing. The beginning stage is called the freezing stage because the arm is just starting to freeze up. The end stage is called the thawing stage because the patient will begin to feel some relief and will gradually regain movement in the arm. The middle stage is the frozen stage when the patient has no ability to move the arm at all.

Frozen shoulder symptoms are very odd. A patient may wake up one day unable to move the arm and shoulder, or they may notice the symptoms come on very gradually.There are treatments available for frozen shoulder, such as deep heat ultrasound massages and various forms of physical therapy. However, these treatments are usually a last resort as most doctors prefer to not treat the condition at all.

There are a lot of helpful herbs for arthritis. A lot of people prefer to use natural solutions for their pain instead of pharmaceuticals. Different herbs for arthritis are available online or in health food stores.

Alfalfa is one of the folk remedy herbs for arthritis. People in southern Appalachia use Alfalfa tea because it is rich with nutritive minerals. It is recommended that you do not take alfalfa powder; but take the tea instead.

Alfalfa as herbs for arthritis contains an amino acid that can cause symptoms that are similar to systemic lupus. Systemic lupus is an autoimmune disease that can also cause joint pain. There have been some scientific studies that show that these symptoms can occur in both animals and humans as a result of eating alfalfa. There is not a significant amount of the amino acid in alfalfa tea.

To use alfalfa as herbs for arthritis, place 1 ounce of alfalfa in a pot and cover it with one quart of water. The alfalfa needs to boil for thirty minutes. The alfalfa tea regimen should only be done for two to three weeks, and then you should take a break for seven to ten days before starting again.

Angelica is an herbs for arthritis that has been used in European folk medicine since antiquity. It can be used to treat arthritis. The Western variety of angelica has twelve anti-inflammatory constituents, ten muscle relaxant constituents, and five pain-relieving ones.

The Chinese sometimes use their native variety of the plant herbs for arthritis. The Chinese species is sold in North America under the names dang gui or dong quai. It has been gaining in popularity because it works.

To use angelica as herbs for arthritis, place one tablespoon of the cut roots of either species of angelica into a pint of water and bring it to a boil. Cover and boil for two minutes. Remove the herbs for arthritis from the heat and let stand, covered, until the water cools to room temperature. Strain and drink the tea in three doses during the day for two to three weeks at a time. Then, take a break for seven to ten days and start the treatment again if desired.

Black Cohosh is an American Indian treatment herbs for arthritis using the root of a black cohosh. There are five species worldwide that have been used to treat rheumatism. Black cohosh contains aspirin-like substances as well as other anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties.

Black Cohosh needs to simmer to be effective herbs for arthritis. Simmer one teaspoon of black cohosh root in one cup of boiling water for about twenty minutes. The root will need to be strained and the tea should be divided into two doses to take during the day. As with all herbs for arthritis, treatment can last for two to three weeks, then a break needs to be taken for seven to ten days before starting the treatment again.

Relieve Arthritis Pain With Honey And Cinnamon

Arthritis pain is nothing to joke about. It makes for miserable lives. While checking into natural remedies, I came across how to relieve arthritis pain with honey and cinnamon. I know it sounds a bit weird - but who cares if it works!

There are a couple of ways to take the honey and cinnamon - as a daily drink or as a tincture to put on painful and swollen joints.

For the drink: For your health, the best quality organic honey would be preferable as well as good quality cinnamon. It seems though there are many ‘recipes’ out there, so there seems to be no need to obsess about exact measurements. One cup of hot water with two spoons of honey in it and one small teaspoon of cinnamon. This can be taken once or twice during the day (i.e. in the morning and before bed). If this is too sweet, then reduce the honey to one teaspoon. Similarly if the cinnamon taste is too hard to take, then reduce it to half a teaspoon. It seems only important that honey and cinnamon are present in the mix. It really depends on what works for you.

For the tincture: Mix one part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and add a small teaspoon of cinnamon powder until it forms a paste. Massage this paste onto the itching/painful part of your body in a slow circular motion. Many people have found that their pain gets noticeably less within a matter of minutes.
Considering that there are a large number of people being helped every day by taking this concoction of honey and cinnamon to relieve their arthritis pain, I would imagine it’s definitely worth a try. If it doesn’t work right away (although many people do report an immediate effect), please try it out for a minimum of four weeks. There really is nothing to lose and everything to gain!

It seems that this combination is also helpful for the common cold, coughs and sinus infections, hair loss, bladder infections, stomach aches, high cholesterol and even toothache (where you put the tincture made with honey and cinnamon without any water on the aching tooth up to three times a day. This mixture taken daily also strengthens our immune system, protecting the body from harmful bacteria and viral attacks. Honey itself has various vitamins and iron in large amounts.

To summarize this is definitely something to include in your family’s medicine cabinet - even though honey and cinnamon reside in the kitchen!

A Natural Remedy For Gout-Celery

Celery Cures Gout ? It May Reduce Pain, Lower Blood Pressure and Be A Gout Remedy

This article explains why celery stalks, or celery seed extracts, are beneficial in various ways for gout sufferers and how it is thought to work for them. The opinions of two experts and the results of two small studies are explained. Suggestions for how to eat celery are included.

Both celery stalks and seeds are touted as gout remedies for reducing uric acid levels, reducing pain, and as a diuretic to lower blood pressure. How can the humble celery stalk, or extracts of its seeds, be so helpful?

Gout cures require the reduction of uric acid levels. The usual clinical target is a serum (blood) level of 6 mg/dL. Reducing uric acid levels often dissolves the MSU crystals which are mainly formed from uric acid. The immune system’s reaction to these crystals is the immediate cause of pain and inflammation. Drugs such as Allopurinol are xanthine oxidase inhibitors — it inhibits the enzyme which is responsible for a major step in converting purines into uric acid in the liver, so less uric acid is produced.

Celery is one of the natural substances which may inhibit xanthine oxidase, according to a study on rats, where rats lowered their uric acid from 3-n-butylpthalide, or 3nB for short. This is the substance in celery that gives celery its distinctive smell and flavour.

But 3nB’s benefits for gout sufferers go further. 3nB also has diuretic properties. Thus it promotes the excretion of urine and can lower uric acid levels by improving its excretion in urine. Furthermore, as a diuretic, it acts to reduce blood pressure which is important for gout sufferers because high blood pressure frequently accompanies gout.

Celery and Pain Relief

Two small studies reached interesting and hopeful conclusions about celery as a pain reliever. A celery extract, standardized to contain 85% 3nB was given to 15 arthritis, osteoporosis and gout sufferers. They took 34mg twice daily for three weeks. After three weeks the patients reported lower pain levels, and some reported complete pain relief.

Obviously encouraged by the results, the study was repeated among a larger group, 70 patients this time, who took a higher dosage (75mg) twice daily for three weeks. The results were better than in the first study. The probability that this beneficial outcome was NOT a consequence of the dosage was calculated at 1 in 1,000 chances.

Two small studies "do not make a summer." And more research is required to learn more about celery’s positive effect on uric acid levels.

Expert Opinion

Noted experts have also endorsed celery as a gout remedy. A well known naturopathic doctor, Michael Murray N.D., author of "Dr.Murray’s Total Body Tune Up" has recommended celery, with the usual caveat that more needs to be learnt about how it works.

Another fan of celery, Dr. James Duke PhD, the author of "The Green Pharmacy," developed gout and tried Allopurinol. Then he swapped Allopurinol for celery seed extract. He reported celery seed extract maintained his uric acid level below that which can often cure gout, and that he had not had a gout attack since he began taking celery seed extract. The interesting thing is that he was able to discontinue Allopurinol, and that he said a human, as well as rats, can at least maintain lower uric acid levels from celery.

So there it is. Two experts have endorsed celery and two small studies showed promising results. Celery can be beneficial for gout, reduce blood pressure and alleviate pain. Unwanted side effects were not found in the studies. And the research learnt that pain often returned when celery seed extract was discontinued. So if it does work for you, you may need to take it for a long time, perhaps a lifetime.

How much and in what form?

Four to eight fresh celery stalks daily. They are fresher if they are not limp. The 3nB is in the stalks, not the leaves. Celery goes well with cheddar cheese, which is a low purine food that doesn’t add much uric acid — all foods contain purines to some extent. Juices made from four to eight stalks will also give you the 3nB. Celery can be put in stews which are a good gout meal since they increase your daily water intake as providing the stew’s constituents are low or medium purine level foods — note that clam chowder is high purine.

Dietary supplements

Purchase celery seed extract standardized to contain 85% 3nB. Tablets or capsules. Twice daily for a total of 150-300mg daily. These are especially useful if you’re bored eating celery every day, and when you travel. The extracts may work better than the stalks.

Caution!

Celery should not be taken if you’re pregnant or lactating. And if you have kidney disease. If you’re eating lots of celery or taking celery dietary supplements don’t spend too much time under the sun.

Best Cures for Arthritis–First Need To Know What Type of Arthritis You Have

Before you start looking for cures for arthritis you must first know what type you have. There are more than 100 types of arthritis conditions. The two most common versions of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  This article will look at the differences between these two types of arthritis and a few others, the arthritis cure best for each and other arthritis natural treatments.

Arthritis is a condition that affects more than 48 million people in the US.  Unfortunately because many people think that all arthritis is the same they have tried treatments that have had little or no affect because the treatments were not the best for the type of arthritis they have.

The two major types of arthritis are: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  Osteoarthritis is a "wear and tear" arthritis.  Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory type of arthritis. Other common types of arthritis include: gout, psoriaiatic arthritis, and septic arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is considered a "wear and tear" type of arthritis. It is commonly brought about as our joints age,  or from previous injuries or obesity. Osteoarthritis is often found affecting the areas we use most: hands, wrist, neck, hip, back and knee. There are various medications and natural products that have been helpful in 
Osteoarthritis treatment.  Certain exercises as well can help.  Weight loss may also improve symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a inflammatory type of arthritis.  It can also be chronic in nature is thought to have genetic causes. In addition to joint pain and stiffness, rheumatoid arthritis can also include fatigue. In later staged symptoms can include achiness, muscle aches, loss of appetite ( a lot like the feelings when you have the 
flu). Diet, losing weight, certain exercises, physician prescribed medications and natural arthritis remedies are all viable treatments.

Gout is another type of arthritis that can feel like burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint.  It often shows up in the big toe.  We know what causes gout and that is too much uric acid in the blood which causes hard crystals to form in the joints. Gout can be brought about from being overweight, over eating meat and fish, and 
drinking too much alcohol.  Water pills, also called diuretics, can bring on gout. Gout can occur in the feet,  ankle, knees and most often in the big toe and will show up as swelling, tenderness or even sharp pain. A medical physician will often treat gout with corticosteroids.  There are a number of natural products as well that are 
said to help with Gout. Changing your diet to foods that are low in uric acid can definately help.

Psoriatic arthritis is an arthritic condition that results in pain and swelling (inflammation) of the joints (arthritis) that is accompanied with a skin condition that is a gray discoloration or scaly plaques of the skin 
(psoriasis). With some people abnormalities of the nails may also be present.  The exact cause of the psoriatic arthritis is unknown and there is no known cure.  Treatments are often found in creams and topical products.

Septic arthritis is a arthritis condition caused by infection from bacteria. Typically it will affect one large joint in the body, such as the knee or hip.  Common causes include but are not exclusive to: bacteria spreading from another part of the body, bacterial infection from an open wound, or a contaminated needle.  Symptoms of septic arthritis usually come on quickly with intense pain, joint swelling, and fever, chills, inability to move the infected joint. Best treatment is by a medical physician who can make a proper disagnosis and prescribe medication to cure the infection.

Psoriatic arthritis is a distinct disease, different from rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis- another common type of arthritis- but sharing similar features to each. The disability and functional impairment in psoriatic arthritis can be as severe as that occurring from rheumatoid arthritis.

Typically, a patient will have had psoriasis for a number of years before the arthritis develops. A small proportion of patient will develop the arthritis concurrently with the skin disease and an even smaller percentage will develop the skin disease after the joint disease.

Psoriatic arthritis may affect most joints in an oligoarticular pattern, meaning a few scattered joints are affected and the joint inflammation does not have the symmetrical pattern seen in rheumatoid arthritis. Enthesitis, which is inflammation of the tendons that attach to bone, is common in psoriatic arthritis. ‘Sausage digits’ - swelling of the fingers and toes so that they look like little sausages is frequent. Nail changes are also common. These include "pitting" and separation of the nail from the nailbed. Some patients will develop carpal tunnel syndrome because of inflammation in the wrist. Inflammation of the eyes is a serious complication, as is involvement of the aortic valve of the heart.

Joint deformity is frequent and affects 40% of patients with the disease. Psoriatic arthritis has a significant impact on quality of life. The skin disease is a tremendous burden and often leads to depression.

The inflammatory process that causes both the skin disease as well as the joint disease is driven by elevated levels of a substance called tumor necrosis factor, or TNF.

A patient with psoriasis who complains of joint pain, swelling, morning stiffness, and fatigue should raise a high level of suspicion for the diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis.

Laboratory testing will show evidence of inflammation and imaging procedures such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help confirm the diagnosis.

Treatments that improve the skin disease do not necessarily improve joint symptoms and vice versa.

Treatment goals include symptomatic relief and control of disease progression.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are helpful for relieving some symptoms. However the majority of patients with psoriatic arthritis will require a combination of methotrexate and anti-TNF biologic therapy. Anti-TNF therapies have provided a significant advance in the treatment of both the skin as well the joint disease in patients with psoriatic arthritis.

As some would already know, it is the capsaicin in red pepper that interferes with how people perceive pain. The substance also causes the generation and release of more endorphins. One other beneficial substance in red pepper is salicylate. Aspirin contains this substance.

Herbal remedies for arthritis also typically do not have standard measurements. Different sources have different opinions on how much you should take of a remedy. There is always the possibility that you could take the wrong advice resulting in the intake of incorrect amounts.
